Basic Chai
Few tea recipes are as satisfying as a well-made Basic Chai. The star here is cardamom, supported by a short list of everyday ingredients. Sweet without being heavy, it works just as well for an afternoon treat as for dessert. Below you will find the full ingredient list, the method, and a few tips we think make the difference.
- Serves 2
- Level Easy
Ingredients
- Cardamom
- Ground Cinnamon
- Chopped Ginger, grated
- 2 Spoons tea leaves
- ½ cup Milk
- Sugar
Method
- Bring 1 ½ cups water to a boil, add the fresh spices, and boil for 1 minute.
- Add the tea leaves, cover, and steep for 3–5 minutes
- Bring the milk to a boil.
- Strain the tea mixture to remove the solids.
- Add milk and sugar, and serve hot with samosas or kachoris.
Tips for the best Basic Chai
- Read the whole method before you start and measure out the 6 ingredients first — it keeps the pace relaxed once the heat is on.
- Rest the finished dish for a few minutes before serving — it lets the flavours settle and the texture firm up.
- Taste as you go. Seasoning at the end is fine, but adjusting halfway through gives a more balanced result.
- Use a kitchen scale for the dry ingredients if you have one — baking is less forgiving than cooking.
Variations
- Spicier version: add a pinch of chilli flakes or a sliced fresh chilli with the aromatics.
- Fusion twist: keep the method but swap the spices for your own favourites — the Asian base takes well to it.
- Vegetable boost: stir in a handful of spinach, peas or diced peppers in the last few minutes of cooking.
Serving ideas
Dust with icing sugar just before serving and pair with coffee or tea.
Storage
Keeps in an airtight container at room temperature for 2–3 days, or refrigerated for up to a week. Most versions freeze well for 2 months.
