Ingredients
- Vegetable Oil
- Mushrooms, chopped
- Garlic
- Parsley
- Ground Beef
- Salt
- Cream
- Chilli Sauce
- Hamburger buns, sliced in half

Method
- Heat a thin layer of vegetable oil in a frying pan. Add the mushrooms and cook for 5 minutes, stirring regularly, until soft.
- Add the garlic and parsley, and let the mushroom mixture cool.
- Combine the ground beef and cooked mushroom mixture. Shape into patties, and let rest for at least 2 hours.
- Combine the cream and chilli sauce, and set aside.
- Heat a griddle pan. Season the patties with salt on both sides, then place on the griddle.
- Cook the patties until browned on each side and fully cooked through.
- Remove patties from the heat and let rest for a few minutes.
- Toast both sides of the hamburger buns.
- Lay some lettuce and sliced tomato on one half on a bun. Top with a patty, then some burger sauce. Top with the second half of the bun.
Tips for the best Beef and Mushroom Burger
- Do not crowd the pan. Cook in batches if needed so everything browns instead of steaming.
- Let the beef come up to room temperature for 15 minutes before cooking so it cooks evenly.
- Rest the finished dish for a few minutes before serving — it lets the flavours settle and the texture firm up.
Variations
- Vegetable boost: stir in a handful of spinach, peas or diced peppers in the last few minutes of cooking.
- Mild version: halve the chilli and finish with a spoon of yoghurt or cream to soften the heat.
- Swap the beef for lamb or mushrooms or lentils — keep the cooking time similar and check for doneness.
Serving ideas
Finish with fresh herbs and serve family-style in the middle of the table.
Storage
Best eaten fresh. Leftovers keep covered in the fridge for 2 days; reheat in a hot pan or oven rather than the microwave to bring the crispness back.
